It's Your Serve: Choir

August 2, 2010

Have you ever wondered why we have a choir at Oak View? Perhaps you’ve grown so accustomed to seeing them up there every week so faithfully that you’ve forgotten what purpose they really serve in our worship. Or maybe God has been giving you an interest in taking part in the choir ministry.

Why do we have a choir? Well, throughout the Bible, there are numerous examples of corporate worship taking place at locations such as the temple and tabernacle. In almost every case there are a group of singers taking part. In fact, God called for certain members of the priestly tribe to dedicate their lives solely to ministry through singing. In the book of Revelation, we find that even in heaven there will be choirs singing God’s praises. This tells us that a choir/singing ministry is important to God and therefore should be important to us.

What does a choir really do for worship? The adult worship choir at Oak View comprises members of our church who have felt God's call to lead our church in worship. They fulfill this calling in three key ways. First and foremost, they set an example for the congregation by actively participating in worship. In doing so, they help to model what each member should be doing. Secondly, they skillfully point the congregation to God by singing songs and anthems that glorify Him. Thirdly, they serve an active role in encouraging Oak View members to grow in their worship life through personal conversation and interaction.

How do you take part in the choir ministry? The choir is open to any member of our church who feels a call to singing ministry or who feels God has gifted him or her in that area. Right now is actually a great time to join the choir as we are just beginning our fall and Christmas music. If you have an interest in joining the Adult Worship Choir, please e-mail John Cornish () and let him know how you feel God might be leading you to take part.
