"Sacrifice" Part 3: The Sacrifice of Christ

And live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.   Ephesians 5:2

I.   Passover was the most important sacrifice in the Old Testament.

13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. 14 This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD -a lasting ordinance.  Exodus 12:13-14

II.  Jesus is the perfect Passover lamb; His blood covers us in God’s sight

14When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God."  Luke 22:14-16

I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God.
For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness . . .
Isaiah 61:10

III.  Authentic worshippers focus intently on the sacrifice of Christ.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God  Hebrews 12:2

  • Remember how Jesus suffered for you.

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.  I John 3:16

  • Recognize that only Jesus is worthy to secure your salvation.

. . . . 4I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals."  Revelation 5:4-5

  • Realize that one day, you will join with believers from every nation to worship the Lamb.

11 . . .. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12In a loud voice they sang:    "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!"  Revelation 5:11-12
